Visitation with inmates is permitted at the facility. According to the jail’s inmate handbook, visitation with facility inmates is conducted via video conference both onsite and from home. Inmate Work Force

The Detention Division allows prisoners to help maintain the facility and provide services to other prisoners and county residents. This volunteer-based workforce provides many opportunities for prisoners to be active and contribute to their community. Prisoners may work in the kitchen, laundry, or runarounds (internal Inmate General Labor) or in the Outside Inmate General Labor (Inmate Work Crew) facility. Prisoners who work in these detail areas are all hired through the security and medical background check process performed by inmate Work Crew Personnel.

The utilization of prison labor has a significant impact on both the cost of the facility and the county government.

The internal use of prison labor alone equates to more than sixty thousand hours of unpaid labor annually.

Additionally, outside work details such as mowing of the Miracle Field and mowing of county property are provided. Furthermore, manual labor is provided for numerous community projects, such as cleanup and safety work at local schools. Basic maintenance services are also provided at the jail and 911 Center as well as the Courthouse and other local locations. In 2013 alone, the prison work crew provided more than 10,000 man-hours for county projects, despite only utilizing approximately one-third of the available employee time.

The carpet industry is a major contributor to the economic prosperity of the county, which as a population of 83,525. The county seat, Dalton, is renowned as the “Carpet Capital of the World” and has been at the forefront of the 20th century’s tufted textile revolution. Whitfield County’s history has been shaped by other more violent forces, such as the forced removal of the Native American population and the Civil War, in the past century. White settlers first arrived in the region in the early 19th century and interacted with the Native American population until the Cherokee were forced to leave in the early 1850s.
