The Outer Worlds: Vulcan's Hammer Walkthrough (2024)

At one point during The Outer Worlds, you travel to the town of Roseway. While there, you can help out a strange man named Orson Shaw, which serves as the Vulcan's Hammer quest. The mission doesn't have a deep story, as Shaw is just looking for a schematic.

However, there's an objective in The Distress Signal quest to search for secrets for Gladys, and this schematic qualifies. So, you have a big decision about whom you want to help. This guide covers every consequence of the choice and an explanation of how to acquire the weapon in the first place.

Talk To Orson Shaw

To pick up the quest, you need to speak with Orson Shaw, who's in the town of Roseway. More specifically, he's in a building on the eastern side of the area, next to a workbench. Once you engage him in conversation, he mistakenly believes that you're here to kill him. Carry on the conversation by asking him what he's talking about and explain that your presence is due to someone sending out a distress signal.

He will then forget that you're there and go about his work. Get his attention again, and ask him if he needs a hand. He responds by talking about wanting the schematics he left in the nearby Storage Facility. Of course, it's your job to fetch it.

Go To The Storage Facility And Open The Armory Door

After the conversation with Orson, leave the town using the southern entrance. Then make your way to the Storage Facility on the eastern side of the Roseway Gardens region. Shortly after entering the place, you'll be met by a bunch of Marauders.

Once they're dealt with, locate the armory door on the second floor. If you've got a high enough lockpick skill, you can simply unlock the door. Otherwise, you will need the passcode.

A piece of paper next to the lock directs you to the Auntie-Biotics Lab, but you can ignore that. The easier option is to head upstairs and find the small room on the eastern side of the facility - watch out for the mechs on guard duty. In the small room is the corpse of a scientist.Loot the body to acquire the passcode to the armory door. Now head back downstairs to use it.

Find The Schematic

Once inside the armory, use the terminal on the right side. Click on 'armory logs' followed by 'FORCE Phlogisynchotron Pistol' to learn more about the weapon. Then go through the other door in the armory and head down the stairs to Orson's Lab.

There are a few more mechanical guards in this area, so be ready for a fight. After the battle, you can find the pistol schematic on the pillar in the middle of the room.

Give The Schematic To Orson Or Gladys

Now that you have the schematic, you get to decide what to do with it. You can either return to Orson Shaw or head to Gladys on the Groundbreaker to pass it on to her. This is what you get for both choices:

• Give To Orson - He gives you some Bit Cartridges and the Ultimatum Pistol - he will later make you the Ulti-Nature pistol. You also gain experience and a boost to your Auntie Cleo reputation. If you mention that the schematics are contraband, you can intimidate or persuade him to give you some more bits, but your reputation with Auntie Cleo is lowered.
• Give To Gladys - She gives you a similar amount of Bit Cartridges, and it moves you further along in the Distress Signal quest. You also receive a boost to your Groundbreaker reputation. However, you automatically fail the Vulcan's Hammer quest.

After you've given the schematic to one of them, the quest is over.
